STAND TALL. STAND OUT. STAND TOGETHER.
So I continued my deep dive into what really drove me to spend so many hours a day thinking and working on Chivaz. Rather than disown my teenage insecure years, that were obviously so influential on my life, I decided to use the first Chivaz slogan as a building block for something more appropriate to who I am today.
Stand Tall: This still works for the tall socks that Chivaz has, but in all honesty, I would like for Chivaz to make more than just tall socks. Stand Tall today means “Be proud.” Whatever you might believe in or work on, do it to the best of your ability. Go to sleep at night knowing that you did the best you could.
Stand Out: While Chivaz socks will still get you a few weird looks here and there, Stand Out really means “Be Yourself.” I don’t care what you are into, out of, or on the fence about, there is nothing more that I like in people than when they are themselves. Maybe I am just a bit overly influenced by Holden Caulfield, but I can’t stand phonies. I just don’t think that people not being themselves add much goodness to the world. On the other hand, introduce me to a person who loves what they are doing and is happy to talk about it and I will talk to them all day. If you are into flipping burgers, but you are the best f*ing burger flipper in the state, then you should be celebrated. Some people might tell the burger flipper that he should go to college, but I say screw it, let people focus on what they are passionate about. I have to believe this, I am a man with a strong resume that has given up a salary to make $0 with a sock company.
Phew, I have gone on a bit too long with Stand Out. I should have just summarized it as “Be yourself.”
Stand Together: Here is where Chivaz in my mind has really taken a step forward. Instead of just being proud of who you are as an individual, Chivaz would really like for people to take a step back and see things from a bigger perspective. No matter how different and how proud you are, we would also love for you to realize that you are part of something much greater than any of us can really comprehend.
At every level, you are both an individual (yourself) and a human (7 billion of those). If an alien race came to Earth tomorrow, you would probably have a difficult time explaining to them just how different from everyone you really are. And that is ok. We are all people of this planet and in order for the planet to grow into a more healthy and peaceful place, we need to realize that we are all the same while being different at the same time.
